ECHO East Africa (TAA member) invites you to join the 5th ECHO East Africa Symposium, 12thto 14thFebruary 2019. The Symposium will provide a network and training opportunity for those involved in alleviating hunger and poverty in East Africa. It will include three mornings of plenary sessions featuring knowledgeable and experienced speakers, followed by afternoon workshops and discussion groups led by regional agricultural development workers and experts. Topics are currently being discussed for the event. Optional Post-Symposium Tours. We hope that you will make time to gather with us at this very important and effective meeting. It will be a valuable time of learning, information sharing and networking for those working and serving in the East Africa Region.

3rd Agriculture & Climate Change Conference 24/03/2019 9:00 am

3rd Agriculture and Climate Change Conference to be held 24-26 March 2019. This conference will focus on the likely impact of climate change on crop production and explore approaches to maintain and increase crop productivity into the future. Topics will include: Modelling climate change and its application to agriculture; Climate change and increased agricultural uncertainty; Abiotic stress; Effects of CO2 on plant growth; Food security in developing countries; Impacts of climate change on nutrition, quality and resource use efficiency; Improving the efficiency of the food chain; Plant-microbe interactions and climate change; Reducing the impact of agriculture on climate change; Innovative breeding practices; New crops for a new climate. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are invited on the conference topics, submit online by 22 October 2018.

Visit to Walpole Farm, specialist producer of soft fruit 10/04/2019 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

 TAA East Anglia welcomes members and friends to join a visit to the Walpole Farm, near Kings Lynn, Norfolk. This impressive enterprise is engaged in production of a wide range of soft fruit and planting materials. They sell these in the UK and to international markets. They have strong research links to UK horticultural research institutes. Mid-April is a good time to visit, when focus shifts from planting materials (Nov-March) to fruit production (May onwards).

We will be able to see and learn about their: •

  • Company structure and growth for UK and international markets, including Brexit challenges, and activity in the tropics/subtropics (Mexico, E Africa, Morocco etc) markets.
  • Production of planting materials.
  • Production of fruit for PYO and wholesale markets, including packaging.
  • R&D links, including NIAB EMR and Rothamsted (institutional members of TAA).

Programme. 11.00: Arrival and coffee/tea; 11.30: Introduction to the company and its activities; 12.30: Sandwich lunch and discussion; 13.30: Tour of the farm and its facilities and concluding discussion; 4.00: Depart.

TAA E Anglia Seminar: “What can Agriculture offer to Biodiversity Conservation?” 15/05/2019 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

TAA East Anglia 2019 Annual Seminar will be held in collaboration with Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and Cambridge Global Food Security (GFS) – both institutional members of TAA. The theme will focus on what, In practice, agriculture can do to support biodiversity conservation. Two speakers are expected to include Laura Fox (FFI), Martin Kaonga (TAA member and head of Cambridge Centre for Environment), who will talk about their experiences in, respectively, West Africa and Southern Africa. We are hoping to find a third speaker with experience in S America.
