Selection Procedure

Applications for Standard Awards, made on the application form that should be downloaded from this website, may be submitted to the TAAF Secretary  at any time. They will normally be assessed within a maximum period of two months from receipt.

Applications for MSc Awards must be submitted to the TAAF Secretary by 31 March of the academic year in question. Successful applicants will normally be notified of the outcome by 30 April.

All application forms must be accompanied by the following documents:

  • written confirmation from the developing country institution with which the applicant hopes to work of its willingness to host the applicant
  • letters of recommendation from the Course Supervisor and Head of Department in the case of MSc applications, or from two referees (normally last employer or academic supervisor) in the case of applications for long term awards.

The TAAF Selection Committee assesses applications against the following criteria:

  • relevance of the subject to current international development needs
  • relevance of the subject to the applicant's course of study (MSc awards)
  • past academic record of applicant
  • relevance of past work experience (paid or voluntary)
  • potential of project for benefitting the host community
  • ability of host institution to support the candidate in his or her work
  • realism of the project budget
The Selection Committee includes professionals with many years' experience of international development work in a wide range of disciplines and countries.
